Introduced in 1898, the Berliner Gramophone Model “A” Phonograph, priced at $15, represents a significant advancement in the history of sound recording. The early versions featured a bright decal and a distinct serial number, while later iterations included a notable aluminum plate. This particular model bears the serial number “J4870” on its mainspring housing. The black and brass horn, marked with “PAT APL’D FOR” just above the brass bell, seems to be the original. It also includes the original record screw down. Emile Berliner, the inventor of the gramophone, played a pivotal role in the development of sound recording technology. The Berliner Improved Model “A” presented here is an exceptional specimen from the 1890s, seemingly in excellent condition. Aside from possibly replaced felt, the phonograph appears to be entirely original. The cabinet is well-preserved, showing only slight wear on the decal. Accompanied by the Clark/Johnson “J” Reproducer (Reproduction) and its matching horn, this item is an outstanding addition for collectors and serves as an impressive display piece.
