Description:

Standard “X” Phonograph with Beautiful Horn

Offered here is a beautifully restored Standard X phonograph, an early and increasingly hard‑to‑find model introduced around 1904 by the East Liverpool China Company of Chicago—later known as the Great Northern Manufacturing Company. Although marketed under the Standard name, the X was built with Columbia‑manufactured mechanical components, giving it the same dependable engineering and smooth performance found in Columbia’s own machines. In its day, the Standard X was regarded as a well‑made, mid‑grade talking machine, and surviving examples in attractive condition are becoming scarce.

This particular machine underwent a complete restoration several years ago and has been used strictly as a display piece since. The motor still runs well, the cabinet presents beautifully, and the overall appearance is clean, bright, and inviting. It’s the kind of machine that immediately draws attention in a room.

One of its most eye‑catching features is the repainted horn, finished in a bold yellow with black pinstriping—a striking departure from the original red. While not factory‑standard, the color choice gives the machine a lively, cheerful presence and sets it apart from the more common examples. The contrast between the cabinet and horn creates a display aesthetic that feels fresh, decorative, and visually memorable. Whether you’re looking for a unique display piece, a charming conversation starter, or a thoughtful gift for a lover of early sound technology, this Standard X offers a wonderful blend of history, restoration quality, and visual appeal.

If you have any questions or would like additional photos or details, I’m always happy to help.
