Columbia “S” Coin Operated Phonograph

This rare Columbia “S” phonograph dates to around 1905 and represents one of the earliest commercial coin-operated models produced by Columbia. Built for store counters, hotel lobbies, and public parlors, the machine invited listeners to drop a nickel into the slot for a single play—a remarkable intersection of public amusement and early sound engineering. It’s oak cabinet retains the original proportions and craftsmanship, professionally restored to highlight its tight joinery, rich grain, and subtle age. The cabinet includes the matching original lid, with a working lock and key mechanism—a feature that allowed merchants to secure the machine between plays. Beneath the surface is a cast iron motor frame holding its original factory paint, with the coin-actuated trip mechanism rebuilt to function as it did over a century ago. The motor runs smoothly and quietly, rebuilt with period-correct gearing and a precision-tuned feed screw. Even the trip lever arm and the nickel gate plate show authentic wear that speaks to its commercial history. It is paired with a reproduction nickel horn. Subtle touches like the scalloped governor housing, embossed frame, and correct hardware—right down to the cast footings—reflect Columbia’s industrial artistry. This phonograph isn’t just operational—it’s a working time capsule. Everything from the coin gate’s spring tension to the motor’s cadence preserves the feel of what it meant to encounter one of these machines in 1905. For collectors of early talking machines, arcade phonographs or Columbia’s Legacy in public sound, this is an especially compelling piece. Please note that the locks do not come with a key. This early and rare piece will be securely packaged in two boxes to ensure safe delivery. For any inquiries or additional information, feel free to reach out to us.
