Description:

Columbia BH “Champion” Front‑Mount Disc Phonograph (1906) – Rare Transitional Model

The Columbia BH, known among collectors as the “Champion,” is one of the most elusive front‑mount disc machines Columbia ever produced. Manufactured for only a single year in 1906, the BH occupies a fascinating place in Columbia’s lineup — a true transitional model that bridges the earlier AJ style with the larger, more refined machines that followed. At first glance, the BH echoes the third‑style front‑mount AJ, sharing its trim details and corner columns, yet everything about it is scaled up and more substantial. Production was extremely limited, and surviving examples vary in configuration, with some fitted with the optional brass handle and others — like this one — retaining the clean, handle‑less cabinet profile preferred by many collectors.

This particular machine stands out for its beautifully engraved 11‑inch support arm and its exceptionally scarce 18‑inch “Columbia” cut‑out support arm — a feature seldom seen and highly prized. It is equipped with the correct Columbia reproducer and paired with a commanding black‑and‑brass horn that gives the machine both visual presence and strong acoustic performance.

Fully restored and mechanically serviced, this BH is ready for years of reliable play. Its rarity, transitional design, and striking presentation make it a centerpiece‑worthy addition to any advanced collection and a standout display item for anyone who appreciates the artistry of early sound reproduction.
