The Berliner Gramophone Model “A” Phonograph, launched in 1898 at a price of $15, represents a significant advancement in the history of sound recording. The early versions featured a bright decal and a distinct serial number, while the later iterations were enhanced with a notable aluminum plate. Emile Berliner, the inventor of the gramophone, played a pivotal role in the development of sound recording technology. The Berliner Improved Model “A” displayed here is an exceptional specimen from the 1890s, seemingly in excellent condition. In 1900, Emile Berliner founded a factory and record production facilities in Montreal, offering a full line of devices, including a Canadian edition of the Trademark model. These Canadian machines, marketed as Berliner Gramophones rather than Victors, shared more similarities with subsequent Victor models. Berliner settled in Montreal, Quebec, in 1900, where he imported machinery, leased space from the Bell Telephone Company, and established a retail location on Rue Sainte-Catherine. The same year, he designed and registered the “Nipper” trademark; the iconic image of the dog listening attentively to a gramophone would gain international fame under Berliner and later, the RCA Victor brand. Canadian phonographs are highly collectible and sought after by enthusiasts. This particular phonograph appears to be original, except for possibly restored felt. The cabinet is in outstanding condition, showing only slight wear on the decal. Equipped with the original “Automatic Berliner Soundbox” Reproducer and its associated horn, this item is a splendid addition for any collector and serves as a distinguished centerpiece.
