Girard-Perregaux, the esteemed watchmaker, crafted this particular timepiece. In 1939, they produced about 30,000 skeleton pocket watches, each roughly 19 lignes and 10s in size. Despite being modestly adorned with just 7 jewels, these watches featured a distinctive design: their plates were cleverly shaped to mimic the silhouette of an oil rig. The initial lubrication with Shell Oil was not successful, leading to the watches being sent back to Girard-Perregaux for a comprehensive cleaning and re-lubrication with appropriate watch oils. Overcoming this hurdle, Girard-Perregaux distributed the watches to American Shell Gasoline and Oil dealers as an innovative marketing strategy. The watch discussed here is one of the original pieces, professionally overhauled and rigorously inspected. It operates impeccably and boasts a refined aesthetic charm. It also includes the original “Shell” fob, enhancing its collectible value. For any questions, please feel free to reach out.
