Description:

Edison Home Phonograph c.1898 – Early “Suitcase” Model with Brass Mandrel

This early Edison Home Phonograph, produced around 1898, is one of the most recognizable and sought‑after versions of the model—affectionately known as the “Suitcase” for its compact, luggage‑style cabinet. These first‑generation Homes capture the earliest era of Edison’s cylinder phonograph production and are prized today for their distinctive design and mechanical simplicity.

A standout feature of this example is its original brass mandrel. While brass was standard on the earliest machines, most surviving examples show heavy tarnish or were later replaced when Edison transitioned to nickel mandrels in response to customer feedback. Clean, original brass mandrels have become increasingly scarce, making this machine especially appealing to collectors who value authenticity. This unit appears to be entirely original, retaining its early motor with bright brass governor weights and a mechanism that runs smoothly and confidently. The cabinet is in excellent condition, preserving its original finish and a vibrant, well‑defined decal—a detail that often fades or flakes on machines of this age.

Included is a 14-inch reproduction brass horn, which complements the machine’s period look while offering strong acoustic performance. Overall, this is a very fine, well‑preserved example of an early Edison Home—clean, fully operational, and ready to enjoy.

Whether displayed as a centerpiece or added to a growing collection, this “Suitcase” model represents a beautiful and increasingly hard‑to‑find piece of phonograph history.
