Edison Home Kinetoscope

Thomas Edison was inspired to create a motion picture system by the work of photographic pioneer Eadweard Muybridge. In 1888, this device was named “Kinetoscope,” a term derived from the Greek words “Kineto” meaning “movement” and “Scopos” meaning “to view.” Edison introduced the 22mm Home Kinetoscope, which was the first successful home projection system. However, the Kinetoscope had poor image quality and, due to its mechanical setup, could only produce about 20 seconds of film. The production of these machines was short-lived, with few being made and even fewer sold.

Presented here is a prime example of the “Kinetoscope” mounted on the original wooden block and contained within its original metal carrying case. It features a plug-in carbon arc lamp as the light source. Although complete, its use is not recommended. This Kinetoscope is a hand-cranked, 22mm motion picture and lantern slide projector, equipped with a condenser lens and two projection lenses. It stands as an excellent example of a rare Thomas Edison “Kinetoscope,” with very few produced and even fewer surviving. This is a unique opportunity to own a prime piece of history.
